What's going on? August 29 - September 2

Reading Story

This week we are reading the story Jack and Rick. Our spelling focus for this week is the digraph ck. We will be discussing and writing about friendship and cooperation.

During class we have been using Spelling City to practice and reinforce spelling skills. This is a great free resource and a fun way to study for our upcoming spelling tests. Speaking of which...

Spelling Tests

The first grade team creates a homework sheet which is used by every teacher in the grade level. I prefer to give the spelling test on Friday, so despite what the homework sheet says you actually have one extra day to study. :)

Phonics

This year we are using the Saxon phonics program. It is a systematic phonics program which incorporates spelling, reading, and grammar. It has something for everybody!

This week we will be working on the s sound, adding s to a word to make more than one, and the d sound.

In conjunction with this we have been enjoying listening to phonics songs. If you would like to listen along please visit Have Fun Teaching and get ready to jam.

Language Arts

This week we are focusing on nouns. Nouns are words that name people, places, things, and animals. We will be cutting out pictures of people, places, things, and animals from magazines and making posters to display in the classroom. We will also be learning about singular and plural nouns.

See if your child can remember the words to our noun song.

Math

Fact practice - we are focusing on "one more" addition problems this week.

On Monday we began our study on geometry. We are working on identifying the following shapes:

2 dimensional:
square, circle, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, pentagon

3 dimensional shapes:
sphere, cube, cylinder, cone, rectangular prism

Social Studies

We have begun discussing patriotism this week. I have introduced your child to the songs America, the Beautiful, and America. We are beginning to familiarize ourselves with the lyrics to these words and are discussing the meaning behind them.

Georgia Performance Standards

If you would like to learn more about the standards being covered in a 1st grade classroom you can visit georgiastandards.org to view what will be covered this year.
